Is Trump in race for us or himself?

If Donald Trump wanted soft serve questions teed up constantly by a slavishly adoring MSM he should have run as a Democrat. Then he too would get front-runner Hillary Clinton's inane, choreographed what's-your-favor-color queries such as Monday's “Which of our previous presidents have inspired you most and why? [Moderator: Pick one].” Her smirking response: “Sorry President Obama, sorry Bill —Abraham Lincoln.” Given that she worked under Obama as Secretary of State and is married to Bill, it is doubly ironic that a Democrat known to the public as a habitual liar would chose a Republican known as “Honest Abe.”

But, Mr. Trump didn't. Instead, he is running as a poll-leading Republican. Now he is in a petulant, foot-stamping Obama-like spat with a natural ally, conservative Fox News. The network has made the perfectly reasonable decision to once again include Megyn Kelly as a moderator for Thursday's debate in Iowa. However, in this, irony is not the sole property of Democrats. Today's debate-ducking Donald (in a 2011 conversation with the self-same Megyn Kelly) derided other Republicans as lacking courage for avoiding debates. Mr. Trump has soured on Ms. Kelly and therefore is boycotting the event.

Mr. Trump has appropriated Ronald Reagan's 1980 slogan “Make America Great Again,” but he's not invoking Reagan's selfless team spirit of “win one for the Gipper.” No doubt that Mr. Trump loves America, but like all creatures of ego, he loves himself infinitely more. By not debating in Iowa—evaluating actions, not words—he sends the clear message that the voters' right to vet all the candidates via the political process doesn't really matter. Like Hillary, Mr. Trump is really in the race for the personal win. It's the presidency as a prize.

For more than 7 years America has limped along under a dictatorial and mercurial personality. The last thing America needs in 2017 is another rule-breaking Svengali regardless of the little 'R' by his name or the little 'D' by hers.

Applaud Bruce Jenner’s courage

By THE WASHINGTON TIMES - - Monday, April 27, 2015

As a Christian, Republican and transgender individual, Bruce Jenner demonstrates that the conservative umbrella is just as diverse and inclusive as its squawking liberal counterpart (“Bruce Jenner: I’m a Republican and a Christian,” Web, April 25). Today gay conservative voices — most notably Washington Times columnist Tammy Bruce — champion the truth that the Republican party has evolved to a greater degree of social acceptance.

This shift parallels Mr. Jenner’s own personal journey to self-acceptance. In the 1970s as an Olympian, Mr. Jenner epitomized that age’s American spirit and representation of athletic masculinity. Over the proceeding decades societal views of what it is to symbolize the American male (or a Republican, for that matter) have changed favorably to include broader definitions.
Mr. Jenner’s gender orientation aside, to the liberal, sycophantic circle fest that is Hollywood, coming out as Republican is a true act of bravery and defiance.

Naysayers who claim that Mr. Jenner’s transition is nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to earn a few bucks don’t begin to understand the degree of Mr. Jenner’s personal courage.

When the inner gender identity does not match one’s outer appearance it is like being a prisoner in one’s own body. Psychologically I can think of nothing tougher. To compound that internal, private struggle with the very public glare of celebrity by coming out as transgender — and Republican — must be, to one’s character, a trial by fire. By comparison, the pressures of Mr. Jenner’s past Olympic victories appear small. An NBC poll indicated that a staggering 41 percent of transgender people in the United States have attempted to commit suicide. That statistic is a completely ignored epidemic. And similar to his Olympic glory that inspired a past generation, Mr. Jenner’s tenacious example to follow his own path will inspire and save the lives of a new generation of at-risk gender-questioning young people who know nothing of Mr. Jenner’s decades-old decathlon gold metal. Bruce Jenner should be embraced for his dedication to the truth and his conservatism.

Bruce Jenner: all-American then and now (re: Emily Yahr's profile, Style section, Washington Post, February 5, 2015)

I congratulate Emily Yahr on her insightful profile of the many lives of Bruce Jenner.  In the seventies, as an Olympian, Mr. Jenner epitomized that age's American spirit and representation of athletic masculinity.  Over the proceeding decades societal views of what it is to symbolize the American male has changed favorably to include broader definitions.  Like the times, Mr. Jenner has evolved into a greater acceptance of self.  Indeed, when the inner gender identity does not match one's outer appearance it is like being a prisoner in one's own body.  Psychologically, I can think of nothing tougher.  To compound that internal, private struggle with the very public glare of celebrity by coming out as transgender is an act of extreme courage.  Despite naysayers claims that Mr. Jenner's transition is nothing more than a stunt designed to earn a few bucks, Ms. Yahr explains that his sharing of his life's journeys with the world is part and parcel of Mr. Jenner's character.  And similar to his Olympic glory which inspired a past generation, Mr. Jenner's tenacious example to follow his own path will save lives of a new generation of at-risk gender-questioning young people that know nothing of his decades-old decathlon gold metal.

Note: A staggering 41% of transgender people in the United States have attempted to commit suicide, according to one survey. (nbcnews.com, 11/19/2010)
